HALF-CENTURY OF SERVICE: Glenwood Memorial Baptist Church in Danville has honored 18 individuals with membership of more than 50 years. Mrs. Wilmoth Marshall (fourth from the left) was recognized for 86 years of membership and Cornelia Wludyka (fifth from left) for 73 years. Several members unable to attend are not pictured. Each person received a certificate of recognition and a small gift.

RETIREMENT

• C. Larry Frakes will retire as pastor of Cool Spring Church, Mechanicsville, March 31, after 25 years of faithful ministry.

• Betty Geiser has retired as minister of music at Crystal Spring Church, Roanoke, after serving the church for the past 17 years.

• T. W. Johnson Jr. has announced plans to retire as associate pastor of Harrisonburg Church, Harrisonburg, effective the end of June.

• Roger W. Wilcher is retiring as pastor of New Hope Church, Skipwith, after having served the church as pastor for over 14 years.

ORDINATIONS

• Carolyn Jenkins, minister of Christian education at Downtown Church, Alexandria, will be ordained to the gospel ministry by the church on March 29.

• Debra T. Whitworth was ordained to the gospel ministry by Exaltation Church, Midlothian, on March 8.

• Crystal Hill Church, Crystal Hill; revival March 29-31; Jim Burton, guest evangelist.

• Mount Olivet Church, Bedford; revival April 5-8; Roger Roller, guest evangelist.

CHURCH NEWS

• Franklin Church, Franklin, will host “Variations” from Bluefield College on March 29 at 11 a.m. Franklin will be the choir’s final stop during their spring break choir tour week.

• Spring Hill Church, Cobbs Creek, will have a Marketplace Evangelism Weekend on May 1-3.

• Williamsburg Church, Williamsburg, will host a concert by the University of Richmond’s acclaimed musical ensemble, “Schola Cantorum,” on March 29 at 4 p.m. The ensemble will perform music from their recent concert tour of Prague, Slovakia and Budapest.

PEOPLE

Sharon Dennis, member of Alum Spring Baptist Church in Culpeper, received her third WAMMY at the 23rd Annual WAMA Award ceremony Feb. 14. Held at the State Theater in Falls Church, the WAMMIES are a celebration of up and coming as well as nationally known musicians from the greater Washington, D.C., area. Previous winners include Duke Ellington, Chuck Brown, Emmylou Harris, Joan Jett and Mary Chapin Carpenter. Writing and performing with friend and colleague Doris Au MacDonald in their duo, “The Braeded Chord,” Dennis and MacDonald play a half dozen or so instruments. This year they were awarded 2008 Best Gospel/Inspirational Group, the second time they have received this distinction. Last year, their third CD, “Radio Lane,” was awarded 2007 Best Gospel/Inspirational Recording.

DEATHS

• Former Virginia Baptist minister Kenneth D. Berg, and his wife Jan, were killed in an auto accident in Houston, Texas, on Feb. 24. He had served as pastor of Powers Memorial Church in Hopewell and First Church, Suffolk. He is survived by six children and she is survived by one son.

• John Milton Deeds III died Feb. 4 in Lynchburg at the age of 61. He had served several congregations in the Lynchburg area as associate minister. He was chaplain at Avante of Lynchburg for several years and director for the Central Virginia Alzheimer’s Association through 2005. He is survived by his wife, Margaret W. Deeds; two daughters, Rebekah D. King and Angela Deeds; a sister, Leigh D. Boyd; and a niece. A celebration of life was held Feb. 7 at Rivermont Avenue Church, Lynchburg. Interment in Woodlawn Memorial Park in Durham, N.C.

• Mary Stuart Sodergren died Jan. 25 in Suffolk. She served with her husband, R. Wendell Sodergren, in several Virginia Baptist churches. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Martha Inman and Sarah Greathouse; and a granddaughter, Erin Greathouse. A memorial service was held Jan. 31 at Churchland Church, Chesapeake. Interment in Churchland Baptist cemetery.
