News

Holland Road Baptist Church in Virginia Beach, Va., began sharing its facility with Awaken Church on July 10. Awaken Church, which had been meeting in a movie theater and in small groups, has not merged with Holland Road but the two churches have formed a partnership in which both can accomplish their mission.

On Mission

Gathered at an SGA planning session in the fall of 2010 are, from left (back row) Dan Schumacher, Cheryl Douglas-Walker, Ilena Hatton, Ryan Clore, April Sledge, Matt Roberts, (front row) Kendall Ratliffe, Brittany Riddle, Katie Boykin, Ka’thy Gore Chappell and (floor) Josh Beeler.

The Student Government Association of Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond participated in the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of Virginia’s Mission Box project this past academic year. Last fall Ilena Hatton and Caleb Foust, mission chairs, organized a chapel service focused on educating the students on the project to fill boxes for the Lott Cary Mission School in Monrovia, Liberia, with CBFV field coordinator Rob Fox as speaker. As is the case with seminary students (many attending school full-time and working part-time), the endeavor seemed to slip their minds once papers began coming due. So in the spring the SGA utilized its Facebook page to revive the project with a donation blitz asking students to donate specific items on each day of the week. On Friday there was a packing party and 14 mission boxes were filled with school supplies.

Taking part in the delivery of cloth bags are (left to right) Mike Gray, Shannon Bowman, Lillian Cox, Janice Richardson, Robin Cade, Betty Johnson, Virginia Ashford, Christine Wesson, Marisa, Dolores Dean and Julie Sanchez.

Churches in the Mid-Tidewater Baptist Association recently delivered 157 handmade cloth bags filled with personal hygiene items for migrants on the Eastern Shore. Marisa Sanchez, a Virginia Baptist church and community missionary, will distribute the bags through ministries located at Mappsville Baptist Church in Mappsville, Va., and the Cape Charles Hispanic Church in Cape Charles, Va.

MISSION TRIP: Julie Germain, a member of Ox Hill Baptist Church in Chantilly, Va., recently traveled to Mali, Africa, with a team from Mission 10:14 from First Baptist Church in Georgetown, Texas. While there Julie was able to visit with her World Vision adoptee. She took quilts made by women from Ox Hill Baptist Church and other small gifts for the family. Pictured is Germain (center of photo) and the family in Mali.
