As a symbol of celebration for a decade of bold leadership and ambitious achievement, the state of North Carolina awarded one of its highest honors — the Order of the Long Leaf Pine — to Chowan University president M. DEATHS

Retired Virginia Baptist pastor Clarence H. “Whitey” Davis died Sept. 29 at the age of 70. He had served as campus minister at Bluefield (Va.) College, associate pastor at North Run Baptist Church, Richmond, and pastor of New Hope Baptist Church, Appomattox, Va.; West Side Baptist Church, Harrisonburg, Va.; Oak Forest Baptist Church, Chesterfield, Va.; and Sharon Baptist Church, Green Bay, Va. He completed 37 years of ministry upon his retirement in 2011. He is survived by his wife, Joy R. Davis; one daughter, Carolyn D. Phillips; two brothers, John B. and Billy Davis; and two sisters, Dorothy Coleman and Clara Fleming. A celebration of his life was held Oct. 2 at Oak Forest Baptist Church.

200th anniversary
Elk Creek Baptist Church, Mineral, Va., celebrated its 200th anniversary Sept. 7-8 with a barbecue and gospel concert at its worship area on the shores of Lake Anna. Sunday worship featured John Upton as guest speaker, followed by a picnic and concert. Special guests were the pastor and choir from Laurel Hill Baptist Church, an African-American congregation formed after the Civil War by members at Elk Creek Baptist Church.

Haggard Cowen “Sandy” Ellis died Sept. 11 at the age of 94. He served churches in North Carolina, Kentucky, Florida, Tennessee and was called to the pastorate of First Baptist Church in Charlottesville, Va. in 1957 where he served for nearly three decades. He was active as a denominational leader at state, national and international levels. He is predeceased by his first wife, Nancy Lucille (‘Clle) Haywood Ellis; he is survived by his wife, Carol Robertson Ellis; two daughters, Sandra Ellis-Killian and Ellen Sadler; a stepson, Ronald Townsend and four grandchildren. A memorial service was held Sept. 28 at First Baptist Church, Charlottesville, Va.

John P. Mason, pastor of Woodlawn Baptist Church in Colonial Heights, Va., for the past 15 years, died Sept. 28 at the age of 61. He formerly had served as pastor at Trinity Baptist Church, Norfolk, Va., and Fincastle (Va.) Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Terri P. Mason; two sons, Ben and John Michael Mason; and mother and stepfather, Inice and Paul Reynolds. A memorial service was held Oct. 3 at Woodlawn Baptist Church.

CHURCH TRANSITIONS

First Baptist Church, Silver Spring, Md., will hold homecoming and its final service at 8415 Fenton St. on Nov. 3. The building which is located close to downtown Silver Spring is set to become a 259-unit mixed-use development. In addition to apartments, plans call for 19,000 square feet of retail space. A new building for First Baptist Church will be erected on an adjacent plot. Construction is estimated to begin on the $80 million development by the end of 2013 or early 2014 and completion is slated for the end of 2015.
