ORDINATIONS

Diane Lipsett, professor of New Testament and Christian origins at Wake Forest (N.C.) Divinity School, ordained to the ministry on June 16 by Knollwood Baptist Church, Winston-Salem, N.C.

DEATHS

Jimmy Lewis, pastor of Union Grove Baptist Church, Keysville, Va., died May 29. He was a recording artist and piano player for the Foundations Gospel Group. He is survived by his wife, Karla; a stepbrother, Ted Lewis; step sister, Jeannie McPeak; and nieces and nephews. A funeral service was held June 2 at Union Grove Baptist Church.

Jack Noffsinger, pastor emeritus of Knollwood Baptist Church, Winston-Salem, N.C., died June 4. He became pastor of the First Baptist Church of Gainesville, Fla. in 1951, a post he held until he became pastor of the newly formed Knollwood Baptist Church in 1957. He retired from Knollwood in the late 1980s. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Louise Watlington Noffsinger. He is survived by his wife, Shirley W. Noffsinger; two daughters, Judy and Lynda Noffsinger; son, Tom Noffsinger, and six grandchildren. A memorial service was held June 7 at Knollwood Baptist Church.

Kudos

Glenn Jonas, the Charles B. Howard Professor of Religion and chair of the department of religion at Campbell University, received the 2013 Carolyn Blevins Meritorious Service Award from the Baptist History & Heritage Society during the society’s annual meeting May 20-22. The award is presented each year to a member of the BHHS who has contributed to the life and work of the society. It is named for Carolyn Blevins, a Baptist historian who taught at Carson-Newman College for 30 years before retiring as associate professor of religion emerita.

OASIS Church Music Conference will be July 15-17 at Campbell Univer­sity Divinity School. “Carnegie at the Creek” concert will be Monday at 7 p.m., featuring hymn anthems based in American folklore and traditional hymnody accompanied by local blue grass musicians. The music is celebrating the Appalachian roots of composers Pepper Choplin, minister of music at Greystone Baptist Church, Raleigh, and Joseph Martin, director of sacred publications at Shawnee Press. On Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., Martin and Choplin will be on concert. On Wednesday at 7 p.m. the North Carolina Baptist All-State Youth Choir will bring their state choir tour to Campbell. In addition to Choplin and Martin, conference leaders include Randy Edwards, founder of YouthCue, and Mark Wingfield, associate pastor at Wilshire Baptist Church, Dallas. Fred Bahnson, director of the Wake Forest University School of Divinity’s Food, Faith and Religious Leadership Initiative, will be a featured guest speaker at the annual Wild Goose Festival, to be held Aug. 8–11 in Hot Springs, N.C. This year’s festival focuses on the care of creation and each morning Bahnson will be speaking on food, justice and sustainability.
