VIRGINIA BRIEFS

NewsJim White  |  December 7, 2011

Last day for 2011 gifts. Jan. 5, 2012, is the last day contributions toward the 2011 Baptist General Association of Virginia budget will be received by the BGAV treasurer’s office. Treasurer Eddie Stratton said he encouraged BGAV churches to send their financial gifts to his office by that date.

And the winner is …. The Virginia Baptist Historical Society offered a free membership in the society in a drawing held during the annual meeting of the Baptist General Association of Virginia. The membership was sponsored by a donor. The winner is Janet Gregory Moore of Fredericksburg (Va.) Baptist Church.  When notified, Moore wrote:  “My dad, Howard Gregory, would have been excited about my win. He was always proud of his Baptist heritage. As kids, he took my sister and me to Rhode Island to see the first Baptist church in the United States and told us about Roger Williams’s devotion to God. I look forward to a year of finding out more about my Virginia Baptist heritage.”

Narrative leadership retreat. The Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of Virginia will sponsor a narrative leadership retreat Feb. 5-8 in Washington, D.C. The event aims to engage participants in leadership practices based on narrative thought. It is hosted by CBFVA coordinator Rob Fox and Amy Butler, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Washington. Speakers will be Steve Graham, director of ministerial excellence for the national CBF, and Keith Herron, pastor of Holmeswood Baptist Church in Kansas City, Mo. SBCV at 15. The Southern Baptist Conservatives of Virginia marked its 15th anniversary during its Nov. 13-15 annual meeting, reported Baptist Press. About 840 registered messengers and guests attended the meeting, which included a missionary commissioning service held by the Southern Baptist Convention’s International Mission Board. The SBCV adopted a 2012 budget of $9 million and elected Randall Hahn, pastor of Colonial Heights (Va.) Baptist Church, as president.

New center. Averett University in Danville, Va., launched its Carrington Autism Resource Center Nov. 30 to provide resources for parents of autistic children.
