VIRGINIA BRIEFS

NewsJim White  |  January 19, 2012

2012 Heritage Fellows applications open. Applications are now available for the 2012 Heritage Fellows program, sponsored by the Center for Baptist Heritage & Studies. Each year the Center appoints a few outstanding Virginia Baptist college students as Heritage Fellows. They are presented opportunities to learn more about Baptists past and present, and are assigned a topic  — yet to be announced — for research in preparation for publication. They receive a $3,000 stipend. Applications are open to students who will be college sophomores or juniors in the fall of 2012. They must be active in a Virginia Baptist church or collegiate ministry sponsored by the Baptist General Association of Virginia. Academic requirements and application are available at www.baptistheritage.org. Deadline is March 15. For further information contact the Heritage Center at 804.289.8434.

High school students have essay opportunity. The subject of this year’s Roots & Wings Young Scholars Essay Contest sponsored annually by the Center for Baptist Heritage & Studies is,“Let me tell you about the person who has most influenced my thought as a Baptist and let me tell you why.” Eleventh and 12th grade high school students who attend a Baptist church in Virginia may submit an essay telling about the person from history or contemporary times who has influenced their thought as a Baptist. Winning essay writers receive cash awards and their essays may be published by the Heritage Center. Contest deadline is April 15. Full information, rules and eligibility are posted at www.baptistheritage.org.
