2009: The year in deaths of prominent Baptists

Paschal

Dan Goodman, 40, a professor at Gardner-Webb University's M. Christopher White School of Divinity, unexpectedly Jan. 13.

Oscar Romo, 79, a pioneer in starting ethnic Southern Baptist churches, Jan. 16 from complications related to Parkinson's disease.

Millard Fuller, 74, founder of Habitat for Humanity International, Feb. 3 after a brief illness.

Tom Corts, 67, former Samford University president, Feb. 4 of an apparent heart attack.

Philip Wise, 60, a prominent pastor and leader in moderate Baptist life who helped pave the way for the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship's becoming a member of the Baptist World Alliance, March 30, less than a year after being diagnosed with cancer.

William Reynolds, 88, long-time Southern Baptist musician and author of popular hymns including "Share His Love" and "People to People," March 28.

Rodney Bowling, 46, pastor of Grace Point Baptist Church in Somerville, Ala., found dead inside his church April 7 of an apparent heart attack.

Franklin Paschall, 86, former SBC president and longtime pastor of First Baptist Church in Nashville, Tenn., April 10 at his home.

Lilian Lim, 50, first female president of a consortium of Baptist seminaries in Asia, June 25 in Singapore.

Ernest Mosley, 81, executive vice president of the SBC Executive Committee from 1987 until his retirement in 1998, July 8 after a year-long battle with cancer.

Robert Broome, 66, a founder of the Baptist Peace Fellowship of North America, July 11 after a long battle with cancer.

Douglas Lee, 66, former president of historically Baptist Stetson University in Florida, Aug. 25 from post-surgical complications.

Ana D'Amico, 73, retired CBF field worker and wife of David D'Amico, Aug. 25 at her home in Louisville, Ky., following a lengthy battle with breast cancer.

Edwin Tuller, 95, former American Baptist Churches USA general secretary, who shepherded American Baptists through the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s, Aug. 25 in Pittsburgh.

Nilson Fanini, 77, a Brazilian pastor and evangelist who served as president of the Baptist World Alliance from 1995 to 2000, Sept. 19 of complications following a stroke.

David Treadway, 42, a well-liked pastor active in North Carolina Baptist life, Sept. 27 in an apparent suicide.

Charles Wellborn, 86, retired Florida State University professor and former "Baptist Hour" radio preacher, Oct. 1, at his home in Georgetown, Ky.

Jeff Zurheide, who served as pastor of an historic Southern Baptist church, First Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, before moving to a historic American Baptist church, First Baptist Church in New London, N.H., Oct. 28, after a six-year battle with cancer.

Raymond Coppenger, 100, longtime philosophy at Ouchita Baptist University, Nov. 24 following a bout with pneumonia.
