Staff Changes

Thomas J. Ferrell, to Bethel Church, Woodford, as pastor.

Deaths

Douglas M. Cotter, pastor emeritus of Wakefield Church, Wakefield, died on March 6 at the age of 88. He served as pastor of Wakefield from 1955-1962. He also served churches in New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, as well as Crystal Hill Church, Crystal Hill.

W. Landon Miller, pastor emeritus of Northminster Church, Richmond, died on Feb. 6 in Hollywood, Florida, at age 88. He served as pastor of Northminster from 1965-85. He also served twice as interim of Hillcrest Church, Mechanicsville. He is survived by his wife, Katherine Rankin Miller; a son, Marshall Lee Miller and two grandchildren.

Retired Virginia Baptist pastor Edmund C. Tull died March 8 at the age of 91. He served for over 50 years as pastor, including churches in Washington, D.C., Vinton and Mecklenburg and Wise counties. He retired as pastor emeritus of First Church, Appalachia. He is survived by three children, Sally Tull Darnell and Charles and John Tull; one sister; seven grandchildren, 12-great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services were held Mach 12 at First Church, Appalachia.

Ordination

Joseph Schaloff was ordained to the gospel ministry on March 12 by Grove Park Church, Portsmouth.

Church News

New Highland Church, Mechanicsville, is hosting a Men of Faith Conference March 24-26 which will begin with a concert by “The Kingsmen” on Friday at 7:00 p.m. Conference sessions on Saturday will be led by John Johnson, Larry Frakes, Dan Bagby and Andy and Denise Dovel. It will conclude on Saturday with a 7:00 p.m. concert by Andy and Denise Dovel and with speaker Harry Greene. Registration is required. Orange Church, Orange, is celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2006. On March 19 Fred Anderson, executive director of the Virginia Baptist Historical Society, will portray William E. Hatcher at the morning service.

Other

The Virginia Baptist Women in Ministry will hold its spring conference on Saturday, April 29, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Hillsboro Church in Crozet. Melissa Clodfelter, associate director of vocational formation at Wake Forest University Divinity School will lead a workshop on Interviewing Techniques for Churches and Candidates.
