The Israeli organizers of a controversial gay and lesbian festival that was scheduled for August in Jerusalem have decided to postpone the event for a year.
Sponsors of the WorldPride international festival rescheduled the event for Aug. 6-12, 2006, so that it does not coincide with the planned withdrawal of Israeli troops and settlers from Gaza this summer.
The event had met near-universal opposition from Christian, Jewish and Muslim religious leaders.
