Bluefield College student Matt Brooks will be leading Virginia Baptist college students on mission and in ministry in the coming year. Brooks has been elected statewide president of the Virginia Baptist Student Union.
A junior from Jefferson City, Tenn., Brooks was installed as president during a ceremony April 18. His installation came shortly after he attended the statewide BSU convention, where he hoped to be elected vice president. Instead, he came away as president.
“It was a nice surprise,” Brooks said. “I was humbled, and I'm honored to be able to represent Bluefield College as president. I just thank God for this opportunity.”
Brooks, who has been president of Bluefield College's BSU for two years, said he hopes to represent BC students even more now that he has a state leadership role.
“I want to make sure that Bluefield College remains loyal to its mission of integrating faith and learning,” Brooks said. “In this new role, I can help make sure Bluefield College remains faithful to its calling.”
Brooks will serve as BSU state president for one year, and as part of his duties he will sit on the state BSU council and help plan its fall and spring conferences as well as BSU mission projects.
“My platform or my vision for the presidency is to ‘LEAD'-to Love the people, to Empower God's work, to Advance the Kingdom, and to Defend the faith.”
Brooks has participated in a variety of ministry projects, including mission trips to South Africa and China. In addition to his BSU duties, Brooks is a member of the school's Student Government Association and Student Ambassadors.
