LOUISVILLE, Ky. (ABP) — Russell Moore, 32, has been named dean of the school of theology and senior vice president of academic administration at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, the Southern Baptist Convention's oldest seminary.
Moore, appointed to the post by seminary president Al Mohler, succeeds former dean Daniel Akin, who recently was elected president of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, a sister SBC school in Wake Forest, N.C. Mohler also named James Scroggins as dean of Boyce College, the seminary's undergraduate school. Both appointments are effective immediately.
Previously Moore was assistant professor of theology at Southern and executive director of the seminary's Carl F.H. Henry Institute for Evangelical Engagement. He received his master of divinity degree from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and his Ph.D. from Southern. He and wife, Maria, have two sons.
Moore, of Biloxi, Miss., has contributed to a number of books and journals and is author of the forthcoming book, “Christ and the Kingdoms,” to be published by Crossway. He also has been a contributor to Baptist Press, the SBC's news service. In 2002, Moore's articles accusing the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of radical feminism and a CBF official of plagiarism drew wide criticism.
Before his appointment, Scroggins, 32, was minister to students at Highview Baptist Church in Louisville and assistant professor of youth ministry at Boyce College. He succeeds Jerry Johnson, who has been elected president of Criswell College in Dallas. Scroggins, of Jacksonville, Fla., earned both his master of divinity and Ph.D. degrees from Southern Seminary. He and wife, Kristin, have five sons.
